Under the terms of the Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1989) all service organisations are required to ensure that each and every piece of electrical apparatus is clearly identified and a traceable record of regular maintenance for the item(s) be established. In short this means that all electrical portable appliances must be regularly checked and tested for safety and fit for the purpose intended
A portable appliance is generally an appliance that derives its power via a socket outlet and BS 1363 plug top. This would typically encompass items such as: - fans, kettles, typewriters, desk lamps, mechanical plant i.e. drills, extension leads, and even IT equipment, photo copy equipment, fax machines, in fact any appliance generally found in offices, warehouses and factories all need to be tested.
